A Sad Carter Funny!

I got a letter from the Texas Dept of Health that said Carter was behind on his shots. If he didn't get caught up by the end of February he would be kicked out of daycare. I am a working mom so I could not let that happen. I couldn't figure how he got behind on his shots because I take him to the doctor at least once a year to get a flu shot and a physical. I called the doctor's office to see if this was a mistake, because I was sure it was. Well it turns out poor Carter was behind. The nurse told me he needed an MMR. I asked if I could bring him in to get it. Of coures they said he needed an appointment and a physical. Since I couldn't let him get kicked out of daycare I had to comply.

On the day of the appointment I send Carson to daycare and keep Carter home. I let Carter sleep in until he wakes up by himself. Well he is a total night owl and he slept until almost 12:30. I helped him get dressed and he asked where we were going. He can tell he isn't going to daycare because he is wearing a "nice" shirt and pants. I tell him he gets to spend the day with me and first we are going to eat lunch. We went to his favorite place, McDonalds, the one with the play ground. (there are four in our smallish town) When we are leaving he want to rent a red box movie. I find this a good time to bribe him to be good. I say "if you are good all of the places we go today I will get you a movie." He agrees and we go on. Next stop to see his daddy. Fun for Carter but uneventful. Next stop doctors office. On the way there Carter askes where we are going now so I say "to Dr. Price's office. You remember Dr. Price. He is nice." He goes to our church so that is where he remembers him from. Carter goes with the flow because he has no idea that he is going to get a shot. When we pull into the parking lot of the office Carter and I had a funny conversation.

Him: What are we doing here. I am not hurt.

Me to myself: Not yet anyway.

Him: I don't need a movie anymore we can go home.

Me: Carter you have fun here remember they have toys to play with.

Him: OK

We go inside and have a good visit. He talks to the nurses while they do the height, weight, temp, and pulse. He will not answer any of their questions about colors, numbers, or letters. I am sure they must think he isn't very smart because he just kept saying "I don't know." He plays with the toys and the doctor watches him and then he looks in his ears, eyes, and mouth. Then the doctor says are you ready for the nurse to give him his shots. Carter started throwing the hugest fit ever he was crying and saying "don't hurt me" "I don't want a shot." I explained to the doctor I hadn't quite gotten around to telling Carter he was getting a shot. The doctor said "well you better tell him soon because the nurses are going to be right in." I got Cater on my lap and told him he had to get a shot and if he was really brave I would get him any toy he wanted. He said he would be good. Just about that time the nurses came back into the room and they had a tray of shots. Yes that is right more than one. He needed to get 4 shots. He saw them and just started panicing. One of the nurses and I had to hold him down while the other nurse gave him the shots. I felt sooooo bad. He had no idea. As soon as the last shot was in his arm and the bandaid was on his "shot marks" we were out the door and at the toy store. Carter picked out a new webkin dog. He is happy and we can both forget about this experience for a few years at least.

How traumatizing! I am not looking forward to certain aspects of motherhood--immunization shots would be one of them.

Some times I think it is easier to have babies, at least they have no idea what is going on. When they get older... it's a whole different story. I hope he is doing well.
